Not very long ago I decided to take an online interior design course from NYIAD. This was all in an effort to learn more about the interior design process and design basics. As a way of self accountability, I thought it would be interesting to give an overview of each unit of the course. Not only to make sure that I stay on track but to also to give an inside look, if you guys are interested in starting the course yourself. In total there are 6 units and I plan to give an overview of each unit as I complete them. They are pretty lengthy and dense with information, so I am not sure how long it will take me, but I promise to keep you updated as I make progress.
What you’ll learn in Unit 1
-The elements of a successful design
-The design process
-Measuring and sketching a room
-Evaluating the condition of a room
Unit 1 project
The unit one project centered around the beginning stages of starting a design project. Here we were tasked to complete 3 assignments; a living room lifestyle questionnaire, a room condition checklist, and a living room sketch ( all which are discussed in the unit). First we had to choose a client, either ourselves or a friend. I choose myself as the client. Then we start the process of planning the design for the “client”.
I loved this project. It completely got me out of my comfort zone. I had to get out from in front of the computer and actually measure walls, doors, and windows. You have to be precise too! Just from this one project I learned that I have a lot more patience than I thought. It’s not all glamourous like HGTV makes it out to seem. Trust me this process was time consuming, especially since it was my first time doing any of this. It challenged everything in me but I enjoyed it. My new motto from now on is to fall in love with the process rather than the end result. Stay tuned for my overview on unit two.
